MHFA Essentials offers a simple, evidence-based approach to supporting mental health, no clinical background required. Opening Minds (the Mental Health Commission of Canada's training division) built the ALGES framework from research on what actually helps someone in distress.
Because it's one day with no certification exam, it's accessible to a whole team or community group at once. It works in nearly any setting: a manager noticing a colleague seems off, a coworker overhearing a hard conversation, a neighbour checking in.
For workplaces, it's often a first step: a shared, evidence-based foundation before certifying a smaller group (HR, wellness leads) more deeply.

The Curriculum
-
Developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada, this training grounds itself in real experience, not theory. It's delivered by Token, who’s worked directly in psychiatric inpatient care and community mental health across British Columbia's Lower Mainland, including at Surrey Memorial Hospital. Real Canadians from all walks of life share their own experiences with mental health challenges and recovery throughout the day. The certified ALGES framework anchors every module, so the skills become muscle memory, not just theory. This course meets people wherever they work, whether that's community service, corporate teams, healthcare, retail, the trades, or anywhere else people show up for each other. What you learn in this room goes with you into every room after it.
-
Instead of defining mental health as a rigid binary, you’ll learn about the Mental Health Continuum Model, tracking objective behavioral changes across three distinct states: optimal, declining, and poor health. You’ll learn how to apply the ALGES steps specifically within this model, giving you a concrete tool to spot early warning signs and step in long before a situation deepens into a crisis
-
We look closely at the invisible walls that keep people from asking for help, specifically social and structural stigma. By learning to separate the individual from diagnostic labels, you’ll look at how to navigate diverse cultural perspectives on mental health and use the ALGES communication tools to keep the focus on the human being standing in front of you.
-
The Three Pillars of Self-Care
Holding space for others requires emotional balance, especially in high-pressure service or security roles. We introduce the Three Pillars of Self-Care - focusing on active reflection, purposeful choices, and healthy boundaries - giving you practical, evidence-based tools to sustain your own well-being while utilizing your training.
-
This day is crafted to be supportive, interactive, and entirely free of academic test anxiety. Because confidence comes from practice, you’ll spend the day applying the ALGES framework to real-world scenarios. While there’s no formal written exam, your official Mental Health Commission of Canada First Aid Essentials Certification of Participation is earned through this active engagement and group reflection.
Please Note: To ensure we’re prepared to help when it matters most, this curriculum includes modules on suicide awareness and crisis pathways. Verbal trigger warnings are always given beforehand to maintain a protected, trauma-informed, and supportive environment for everyone.
Reduces stigma
by teaching you to separate the person in front of you from any diagnostic label, whether you meet them at work, at home, or somewhere in between
Recognize early
shifts using the Mental Health Continuum, so you can notice when someone around you is struggling, long before it becomes a crisis
Builds confidence
to start the conversation using ALGES, without needing to have the exact right words
In Their Words
"Token was, quite frankly, fantastic. Her delivery felt genuine and passionate, and it was clear that she truly believes in the material she was teaching. She created a space where questions were always welcomed and encouraged open discussion among the group. I felt respected and validated in my own knowledge and experience, which helped build my confidence and reinforced that my voice matters."
Rob Valerio, BBA, Manager of Health & Safety, Axis Family Resources, Kamloops, BC
Thinking About Going Further?
If your role calls for a formal credential or you want a deeper understanding of mental health challenges and crisis response, MHFA Certification builds on everything covered in Essentials and goes further.
The National Standard of Canada for Psychological Health and Safety, CSA Z1003, developed with the Mental Health Commission of Canada, is the voluntary framework many Canadian organisations use to build psychologically healthy and safe workplaces. A second edition is currently in development. MHFA is recognised as a training programme that directly supports Z1003 implementation.
The standard is being strengthened, not scaled back. Organisations acting now are ahead of where practice is heading.
A nationally recognised MHFA Certification is one of the most direct ways to show the people in your organisation you’re equipped to respond.
